A Preliminary Abundance Estimate of an Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) Contingent Within an Open Riverine System

چکیده
Abundance estimates are essential for fisheries management, but estimating the abundance of open populations with low recapture rates has historically been unreliable. However, by using mark-recapture data modulated survivability parameters obtained from analysis acoustic telemetry data, more accurate can be made species that exhibit these characteristics. One such is Atlantic sturgeon, which were designated a research priority following precipitous population declines throughout 20th century. We addressed this need in Saco River Estuary (SRE), system where sturgeon extensively studied and methods since 2009. These analyzed Bayesian Lincoln-Peterson estimator, constrained Cormack-Jolly-Seber model, to provide an initial estimate system. The resulting indicated approximately 3 299 (95% Credible Interval: 1 462–6 828) utilize SRE yearly, suggesting provides critical foraging habitat large contingent within Gulf Maine. present study demonstrated method utilized herein was effective generating reasonable events rare, therefore may valuable technique supplying fish additional systems display similar

Expression Patterns of Atlantic Sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) During Embryonic Development
During teleost ontogeny the larval and embryonic stages are key stages, since failure during this period of tissue differentiation may cause malformations, developmental delays, poor growth, and massive mortalities. Despite the rapid advances in sequencing technologies, the molecular backgrounds of the development of economically important but endangered fish species like the Atlantic sturgeon ...
متن کاملChanges in age composition and growth characteristics of Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) over 400 years.
Populations of sturgeon (Acipenseridae) have experienced global declines, and in some cases extirpation, during the past century. In the current era of climate change and over-harvesting of fishery resources, climate models, based on uncertain boundary conditions, are being used to predict future effects on the Earth's biota. A collection of approximately 400-year-old Atlantic sturgeon spines f...
متن کاملUsing circulating reproductive hormones for sex determination of Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) in the Saco River estuary, Maine
The Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) is a long-lived, anadromous fish species ranging from Labrador, CA to Florida, USA. In the Saco River, located in the Gulf of Maine, this species was not present during a survey study ending in 1982, but was found inhabiting the estuary in 2007. Although the reason for the return of this sturgeon to this river system remains unknown, resea...
متن کاملPreliminary analysis of ectoparasites of the sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus (Mitchill, 1815) originating from different water habitats.
The purpose of this study has been to carry out a preliminary parasitological analysis of sturgeon specimens in the context of the presence of external parasites, and to determine their possible influence on the health of the fish. The examination of external parasites was performed on specimens of A. oxyrinchus oxyrinchus captured from an open system pond (the Fish Farm in Kuźniczka, Poland) a...
متن کاملImmunophysiology of Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus (Mitchill), and the relationship to parasitic copepod, Dichelesthium oblongum (Abilgaard) infection.
The copepod parasite, Dichelesthium oblongum, is known to infect the Atlantic sturgeon, Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus, within the area near New York city, USA, known as the NY Bight. The gross pathology associated with the juvenile and adult copepod stages along with the parasite's link in causing changes in sturgeon osmoregulatory capabilities has led us to investigate the host immunophysiol...
